My name is Emily Varisco. In 2004, after realizing that a career in business was seeming a bit too dull, I switched my major to Journalism, picked up my first camera and began photographing rock climbers in my spare time. After studying Journalism for a year, I quickly realized that I was much more interested in documenting events through a lens than with a pen. In my junior year at the Metropolitan State College of Denver, I began studying under Kenn Bisio and was very influenced by his techniques. It was through his encouragement that I gained the drive to work hard on photo essays and seek out my own stories to tell.
In 2006 I earned my BA in Journalism with a Photojournalism concentration and a minor in Political Science and moved to the east coast to further my career. I have been freelancing for The News Journal, a Gannett-owned 115,000+ circulation daily based out of Wilmington, DE. Here I have covered a wide range of daily assignments and have gotten to work on a few projects that continually make every day interesting. I have gotten to photograph President Obama, Bill Cosby, Brian Setzer and Sidney Poitier to name a few and have been embedded with the Delaware Army National Guard. My work has appeared in The News Journal, USA Today, Yahoo!, Signature Brandywine and Education Week. I currently reside in Newark, DE where I continue to work on side projects that do not prevent me from my assignments for The News Journal. I recently finished an internship with Magnum Photographer Steve McCurry, who's work can be found in National Geographic. |
